Musk expands Colossus 2 AI complex with two new sites

Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX is adding two more sites, named Gun Range and Spam, to its Colossus 2 artificial intelligence computing complex in Memphis, Tennessee.

Musk disclosed the expansion on X on Sunday.

He said the Spam site previously housed Hormel products, while the Gun Range site was formerly owned by the local police department.

“Gun Range is tracking to be operational by end of November and Spam in December,” Musk wrote.

Musk said he had toured the entire Colossus 2 site around midnight and again the following morning, praising the SpaceX team and its contractors for the progress made on the project.

He built the first Colossus supercomputer in Memphis in 2024, while xAI, now part of SpaceX, began developing Colossus 2 last year to expand computing capacity for its Grok artificial intelligence chatbot.

Last week, Musk said SpaceX had raised $40bn in debt to purchase AI chips.

He also disclosed that the company’s AI business generated more revenue than Starlink in the previous quarter.
