Cognizant sets up 25,000-member team to deploy ChatGPT, Codex

IT services company Cognizant has established a group of more than 25,000 employees to deploy OpenAI’s Codex and ChatGPT tools for its clients.

The OpenAI Frontier Capability Group will initially focus on three areas: software development using Codex, migrating legacy mainframe systems to the cloud, and deploying AI agents for sales and customer service.

Cognizant said the initiative reflects the growing need for skilled workers who can integrate artificial intelligence into existing business systems, rather than simply having access to AI models.

The company disclosed that more than 21,000 employees have earned over 40,000 OpenAI training badges.

The development comes 11 days after Cognizant announced a similar initiative involving 18,000 employees trained to work with Google’s Gemini AI models.

“We are committing more than 25,000 of our people to bring that change inside our clients’ businesses,” said Cognizant chief executive Ravi Kumar S.

More than 21,000 Cognizant employees have earned over 40,000 OpenAI training badges.

OpenAI has also expanded its efforts to help businesses adopt artificial intelligence, launching its own deployment arm in May and acquiring Northslope in July.

The partnership follows OpenAI’s move in April to recruit Cognizant and CGI to help introduce its Codex software development tool to large enterprises.

However, Cognizant is not relying on a single AI provider. Just 11 days earlier, the company announced that 18,000 employees would work with Google’s Gemini AI models, highlighting its strategy of supporting competing AI platforms.
