Washington is reportedly set to approve a $2.8 billion arms package for Israel, according to US media reports published on Tuesday.
The package includes the sale of 40,000 one-ton bombs, making it one of the largest munitions deals sold in recent years.
The Washington Post reported that the package, which is funded with US taxpayer dollars, includes some of the most destructive munitions in Western arsenals.
The munitions reportedly include 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117s, and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator warheads.
The New York Times reported, citing a US official, that the administration of President Donald Trump had approved the sale.
A senior administration official told AFP that “all foreign arms sales are moving through the appropriate process,” declining to comment further on pending transactions.
A State Department spokesperson also told AFP that “as a matter of policy, the Department does not confirm or comment on proposed arms sales until they have been formally notified to Congress.”
The reported deal comes amid an ongoing munitions shortage within the US military, with stockpiles rapidly depleting following the war with Iran.
The US spent $22.3 billion on munitions between February 28 and June 30, according to the report.
In February 2025, the Trump administration approved the sale of more than $7.4 billion in bombs, missiles and related equipment to Israel, including MK-84 munitions.
Former President Joe Biden’s administration had previously blocked a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel over concerns about civilian deaths in Gaza.
The Trump administration, however, approved the shipment after taking office in early 2025.
