The United States Department of State has launched an online portal that lets members of the public report suspected visa fraud and misuse.

The department said the new tool is meant to give the public a convenient and reliable channel for submitting information that could help authorities identify and investigate suspected violations of US visa laws.

According to the State Department, tips from members of the public have helped authorities identify and hold accountable tens of thousands of people suspected of visa fraud during President Donald Trump’s second term.

The department said visa fraud can involve falsified documents or travel plans, sham marriages arranged by brokers, shell companies, fabricated job offers, birth tourism and other schemes aimed at gaining entry into the United States by fraudulent means.

It warned that such activities can harm US communities, the economy, American workers, national security and public safety.

The Department of State said its Bureau of Consular Affairs is stepping up fraud detection and prevention efforts under the leadership of Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

It added that those found violating US laws could face consequences including visa revocation and referral to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.

Members of the public with information about suspected visa fraud or misuse are encouraged to submit reports through the department’s official portal.
