Google has unveiled several new features set to roll out to Android phones this year, including its Gemini Intelligence AI system and a new tool designed to reduce distractions from apps.
The updates were announced during a livestreamed “Android Show” event and will be released in phases over the coming year. The free upgrades will be available on both new and existing high-end devices, including Samsung and Pixel smartphones.
Google also disclosed plans to launch a new range of laptops in the autumn.
Gemini Intelligence will unify the company’s most advanced AI tools into a single system designed to offer more proactive assistance.
It will carry out tasks by working directly within the apps on a user’s phone.
For example, it could choose and order a takeaway, convert a grocery list into a ready-to-checkout online basket, or locate a school book list in an email and purchase the required titles.
The system will line up the orders and then prompt the user for final approval.
Starting in late June, Chrome’s new auto-browse feature will extend similar automation to websites, helping users complete tasks such as booking tickets or locating parking.
Autofill is also being enhanced to handle more detailed forms by automatically retrieving relevant information from connected apps and services.
