The Brazilian government has officially announced Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the BRICS bloc, highlighting shared interests in strengthening cooperation among Global South nations and advocating for the reform of international organizations.
This move was confirmed in a statement from Brazil’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS. It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement said.
Brazil, which assumed the BRICS presidency for 2025 on January 1, has welcomed Nigeria as the ninth partner country in the bloc.
Nigeria joins Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, all of which were included under the partner country category introduced at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
