SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said on Monday that he plans to give every child in the United States one share in the company next year.
According to an August filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares. The figure rises to 6.4 billion when unvested awards and stock options are included, representing a 48.4 per cent beneficial stake in the company.
Official US census data showed that the country had about 72 million children under the age of 18 as of July 1, 2025.
Based on SpaceX’s closing share price of $146.03 on Friday, the proposed giveaway would be worth approximately $10.5bn.
“This will be the first of many,” Musk said in a post on X.
Musk’s announcement follows Anthropic’s disclosure that it plans to allocate 5 per cent of its shares to a new public benefit fund, with the stake potentially increasing as the company’s valuation rises.
Responding to an Anthropic post about the initiative on X on Sunday, Musk recommended distributing the shares directly to the public, adding that this was what he intended to do.
