Apple considers all options as memory chip debate grows

Apple chief executive John Ternus has said “all options should be on the table” regarding memory chip supplies, following reports that the company tested Chinese-made chips.

Ternus, who became CEO on 1 September, made the remarks in an interview with TIME.

He features on the cover of the magazine’s 2026 Best Inventions issue, which also highlights the iPhone Duo.

“The constraints in memory are absolutely a crisis.” Ternus told TIME.

TIME reported that the Financial Times disclosed in July that Apple had started testing memory chips manufactured by a Chinese company.

The development prompted a bipartisan group of United States senators to write to Apple, warning that the move could threaten national security.

The US government has also cautioned the company against using Chinese-made memory chips.

Apple’s revamped Siri, launched in the US in September, runs on an Apple model that incorporates Google’s Gemini technology.

Ternus dismissed suggestions that relying on a rival’s technology represented a retreat from Apple’s approach of developing its products in-house.
