Trump, Xi agree to set up communication channel for AI incidents

The United States and China have agreed to establish a “communication channel” to address incidents related to artificial intelligence, the White House announced on Friday.

The agreement was reached following a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, which concluded on Friday, according to AFP. Their discussions centered on several pressing matters, including the growing challenges associated with artificial intelligence.

According to a fact sheet released by the White House, the two nations formally established a “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on risks and benefits” of AI. The statement also noted that the leaders had reached an agreement to adopt the term “SI” rather than “AI” going forward.

The White House indicated that the next round of discussions under this dialogue is scheduled to take place by November.

In addition to the dialogue, the US and China also agreed to set up a “bilateral communication channel” specifically for handling incidents that may arise.

Ahead of the summit, Trump had signaled the significance of the topic, stating, “Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”

He further added on social media, “That is China’s position also.”

Xi, for his part, adopted a more measured approach, urging both the US and China to responsibly manage their rivalry as global powers while ensuring that AI development remains within the bounds of human oversight.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Xi stated, “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control.”
