Apple plans expansion of iPhone satellite connectivity features

Spain hits Apple, Amazon with €194m antitrust fine

Apple is reportedly preparing to expand its satellite-powered features on the iPhone, moving beyond emergency calling and texting to a broader range of connectivity tools.

The tech giant is developing next-generation upgrades that could eventually allow iPhones to connect directly with satellites for enhanced coverage, without relying on traditional telecom partners such as Globalstar, SpaceX, Viasat, or Echosta, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple currently partners with Globalstar for its Emergency SOS via satellite feature, introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14.

The new initiative is aimed at making iPhones more functional in remote areas and during emergencies.

According to the report, plans include developing an Application Programming Interface that integrates satellite connectivity into default apps like Phone, Messages, Safari, and Maps, while allowing third-party developers to build satellite-enabled features into their apps.

One expected benefit is the ability to use Apple Maps offline for navigation without a Wi-Fi or mobile signal.

The update will also let users send photos through satellite messages and improve connection stability.

Unlike the current system, which requires users to point their devices toward the sky, the upcoming version is expected to connect automatically.

Apple’s move could also strengthen its 5G ecosystem by enabling iPhones to connect directly to satellites for wider coverage.

While basic features may remain free, the report noted that users will likely pay additional fees through their carriers for premium satellite services.
