Longtime partners OpenAI and Microsoft both reported outages affecting key products on Monday, although there was no indication that the incidents were related.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Work, its enterprise artificial intelligence agent, had been experiencing elevated error rates and latency for about three hours.

Microsoft, meanwhile, reported issues affecting its Exchange Online service.

“Users across multiple subscription plans may be unable to start or continue tasks in ChatGPT Work,” OpenAI said on its status page. “We are continuing work on implementing a mitigation.“

As of 2:24 p.m. ET on Monday, more than 1,100 users had reported problems with OpenAI’s products on Downdetector, a website that monitors service outages. Reports of issues with Microsoft Outlook were significantly higher, reaching nearly 4,600 shortly afterward.

Both services had recorded higher numbers of outage reports earlier in the day.

“ChatGPT Work isn’t working right now,” OpenAI’s ChatGPT account wrote in a post on X. “Sorry about that, we’re working on a fix!”

In July, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, an enterprise AI agent that directly competes with Anthropic’s Claude Cowork.

The agent is designed to help employees tackle more “ambitious tasks,” including creating polished presentations, web applications, spreadsheets and documents, as well as handling other complex projects.

Microsoft first invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019, giving the software giant an early foothold in artificial intelligence, three years before ChatGPT was launched.

The investment later grew to $13 billion as the strategic partnership deepened.

In more recent years, however, the two companies have increasingly found themselves competing across multiple fronts.
