Amazon adds OpenAI’s open-weight models to AI platforms

Amazon cuts jobs in books division amid broader efficiency push

Amazon Web Services has announced the addition of OpenAI’s open-weight foundation models to its AI platforms, marking the first time the models will be available on Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker.

The move gives AWS customers access to OpenAI’s recently released gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b models, enabling them to build and scale generative AI applications using open technology. The integration expands AWS’s model offerings and reinforces its commitment to offering flexible, cost-effective AI tools to enterprise users.

According to AWS, the larger gpt-oss-120b model is three times more price-efficient than Google’s Gemini, five times more than DeepSeek-R1, and twice as efficient as OpenAI’s proprietary o4 model when running on Amazon Bedrock.

The models will also be accessible through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, AWS’s hub for pre-trained models and AI deployment. The company says the addition enhances the diversity of its fully managed foundation models, making it easier for businesses to experiment and innovate with generative AI.

Commenting, the Director of Product at AWS, Atul Deo, said, “Open weight models are an important area of innovation in the future development of generative AI technology, which is why we have invested in making AWS the best place to run them, including those launching today from OpenAI. The addition of OpenAI as our newest open weight model provider marks a natural progression in our commitment to bringing cutting-edge AI to organisations worldwide, and the unmatched size of our customer base marks a transformative shift in access to OpenAI’s advanced technology.”

The announcement comes shortly after OpenAI introduced the gpt-oss models, positioning them as high-performance, low-cost alternatives in the growing market for open-source AI tools.

“Our open weight models help developers—from solo builders to large enterprise teams—unlock new possibilities across industries and use cases. Together with AWS, we’re providing powerful, flexible tools that make it easier than ever for customers to build, innovate, and scale,” Dmitry Pimenov, product lead, OpenAI, noted.
