Many Kindle users are opting to jailbreak their devices after Amazon announced it will discontinue technical support for older models.

Starting May 20, the company will officially end support for the following Kindle devices:

Kindle 1st Generation

Kindle 2nd Generation Kindle DX

Kindle DX Graphite

Kindle Keyboard

Kindle 4

Kindle 5

Kindle Touch

Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation

Kindle Fire 1st Generation

Kindle Fire 2nd Generation

Kindle Fire HD 7

Kindle Fire HD 8.9

The decision means users will only be able to access content already downloaded to their devices. As a result, many are choosing to jailbreak them.

Jailbreaking involves bypassing the software restrictions Amazon places on Kindle devices.

Doing so allows users to install custom fonts, change screensavers, add alternative reading apps, and use third-party tools that enhance the device’s functionality.

However, it’s worth noting that jailbreaking a Kindle may violate Amazon’s terms of service.

In many jurisdictions, jailbreaking for personal use is not considered a criminal offense.

However, it can cross into illegality if it involves copyright infringement, the distribution of pirated software, or the commercial sale of modified devices.
