Meta has announced on its support page that the company will no longer support cross-app chatting between Messenger and Instagram from “mid-December 2023”.
Three years after announcing the chat connection that lets users message friends on Instagram and contacts on Facebook using the same Messenger app, Meta is stopping this feature.
With the feature, Instagram users utilise Messenger to call or message their Instagram friends, and they can message or call their Facebook friends straight from their Instagram direct messages. To activate this function, all users have to do is enable it from the Instagram or Messenger settings.
Users won’t be able to call their Facebook friends from Instagram or initiate new conversations with the discontinuation of this integration
The current Instagram-based conversations they have with their Facebook pals will become read-only. This implies that after the disintegration, they will still be able to read these discussions but not send messages.
Meta has not provided a specific explanation for stopping the integration, but given that WhatsApp is already developing third-party chats to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, it’s plausible that this is also the reason behind the decision to stop cross-app messaging between Instagram and Messenger.
