Mastodon, a German rival that takes pride in its decentralized, user-driven structure, has seen a rise in activity as a result of the unrest at Twitter caused by new restrictions on the number of postings users can view.
“Looks like Mastodon’s active user has increased by a hundred thousand over the last day. Not bad,” Mastodon CEO Eugen Rochko said on the platform late on Sunday.
“I would prefer it if Elon Musk was destroying his site during the work week. This isn’t the first time,” Rochko wrote in another post.
Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced new restrictions on how many posts an account can read in a day on Saturday.
He had previously expressed his displeasure with companies leveraging Twitter’s data to train their huge language models, such as OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT.
Twitter was taken over by Musk in October 2022. Since then, some users and advertisers have stopped using the website due to his inconsistent management style.
Mastodon includes capabilities that are comparable to those of Twitter, but instead of being managed by a single organization, it is installed on hundreds of computer servers and is mostly managed by volunteer administrators who connect their systems to form a federation.
