Tesla nears completion of AI5 self-driving chip design – Musk

Musk's DOGE team allegedly spying on US govt workers

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company has almost finished designing its AI5 self-driving computer chip.

This development of the AI6 chip is already underway, with Tesla targeting a nine-month design cycle for its next-generation chips.

“Our AI5 chip design is almost done, and AI6 is in early stages, but there will be AI7, AI8, AI9 … aiming for a 9-month design cycle,” Musk said in an X post.

In November, Musk revealed that Tesla’s AI5 chips, made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, are expected to enter high-volume production in 2027, replacing the current AI4 chips in its vehicles.

Back in July, the automaker struck a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung Electronics to produce A16 chips in the United States.

Musk’s latest update suggests Tesla is progressing toward its goal of developing custom chips, cutting its reliance on AI chip leader Nvidia.

“Join us to work on what I predict will be the highest volume AI chips in the world by far!” he added.
