South Africa reaffirms no compensation for Nigerians’ abandoned properties

Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, South Africa’s minister in the presidency, has reaffirmed the country’s position against compensating Nigerians who left properties behind after being evacuated from the former apartheid nation.

Earlier, it was reported that the Nigerian government would explore options for possible compensation for affected citizens.

However, speaking at a press conference on Friday, Ntshavheni rejected the prospect of compensation.

She said all legitimate properties in South Africa are formally registered with the relevant authorities, while informal settlements are illegal and are not recognised by the government.

Ntshavheni advised migrants who own property in South Africa to sell their assets through the country’s property market.

Her remarks drew criticism from Shehu Sani, who expressed shock at the minister’s comments.

“This is from a SENIOR Government official and NOT a thug from the streets,” Sani said.

Responding to the criticism, Ntshavheni maintained her position, insisting that her remarks reflected the South African government’s stance.
