Electronics giant, Apple has disclosed that Russia is targeting journalists who use Apple product with a spyware Pegasus.
In recent years, the spyware has targeted scores of journalists, activists, and politicians.
Timchenko, the founder of the independent media outlet Meduza, was later identified as a target of the “zero-click” spyware Pegasus, according to tech and privacy experts, as The New York Times reported.
The Pegasus spyware, which can attack iPhones by sending iMessages that function without users ever clicking on them, was used by Russian state officials to target a journalist for the first time, according to the Times.
The Times said that a number of other journalists connected to independent Russian media outlets said Apple had issued them identical warnings on Thursday. Even after getting the tip, one of these journalists, Yevegny Erlich, advised his sources to stop providing him with material.
Insider previously reported that Amnesty International and a number of other organisations claimed that clients from all around the world used the programme to hack the phones of dozens of journalists, activists, politicians, and corporate executives.
The Israeli corporation that developed Pegasus, NSO Group, has refuted Amnesty’s allegations.
