Google is enabling its Gemini AI chatbot to access personal photos through the Nano Banana image generation tool.
The company announced on Thursday that users will be able to link their Personal Intelligence feature, an AI system that connects across Google apps to deliver tailored responses, with the Gemini chatbot.
Once users opt in, Nano Banana will be able to generate personalised images using photos stored in Google Photos, removing the need for manual uploads to the chatbot.
Users will be able to prompt Gemini with requests such as “create a claymation image of me and my family enjoying our favorite activity,” and the chatbot will automatically generate the image, according to the company’s blog post.
Nano Banana, which gained popularity after its launch last year, quickly went viral as users uploaded personal photos to create miniature digital figurines of themselves.
The surge in demand was so intense that it strained Google’s infrastructure, forcing the company to temporarily restrict usage in order to reduce pressure on its custom-built Tensor Processing Units.
The surge in popularity also propelled the Gemini app to the No. 1 position on the Apple App Store, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
