The French privacy authority CNIL has stated that Worldcoin’s collection of biometric data “seems questionable” in terms of legality.

Users of the new Worldcoin platform which was founded by OpenAI founder, Sam Altman must scan their irises in order to receive a digital ID and, in some countries, free Bitcoin.

According to its website, during the past two years, 2.1 million people, primarily as part of a trial, have signed up.

A gleaming, spherical “orb” from Worldcoin has set up sign-up stations across the globe where people may have their faces scanned.

The Worldcoin Foundation stated in an email to Reuters that Worldcoin was “designed to protect individual privacy and has built a robust privacy programme” and is dedicated to making sure it complies with legal obligations.

A Cayman Islands-based organisation called the Worldcoin Foundation defines itself as a “steward of the Worldcoin protocol.”
