The Federal Government has formally concluded its plans for the inauguration of Funtua Inland Dry Port in Katsina State.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Assistant Director, Public Relations Unit of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Rebecca Adamu on Tuesday, according to The Punch.
Adamu stated that the launch has been slated for Thursday.
She said President Bola Tinubu would open the dry port at the Funtua IDP project site, in Katsina State.
“This significant milestone marks a pivotal moment in the council’s commitment to facilitating trade in Nigeria. It is also in line with the performance bond signed by the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola,” she said.
According to her, the project is part of a key NSC performance indicator that aims at completing Funtua Inland Dry Port before the end of the first quarter of 2024.
The Executive Secretary of the NSC, Pius Akutah said that the establishment of inland dry ports, which is supported by the council, would “bring shipping and port services closer to the importers and exporters at the hinterland, decongest the seaports, create job opportunities, improve and accrue huge revenue to the government”.
Recall that, in February 2023, The Muhammadu Buhari Federal Government declared the Funtua Inland Dry Port in Katsina State as a port of origin and final destination for the import and export of cargo.
This means that the Funtua Inland Dry Port is permitted to carry out shipping activities, including clearing and forwarding of cargo to any part of the world.
