Apple is engaged in discussions to integrate Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence engine into the iPhone,Bloomberg reported.
Additionally, Apple has recently explored potential collaborations with OpenAI and has considered leveraging its AI model.
In preparation for the upcoming iPhone iOS 18 release, Apple is developing new functionalities based on its proprietary AI models. However, the company is seeking a partner to enhance generative AI features, including image creation and essay writing based on simple prompts. Although the terms and implementation details of a potential AI agreement remain undecided, Bloomberg suggests that any announcement is unlikely before June, coinciding with Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple has been comparatively slower in deploying generative AI capabilities, which enable human-like responses to written prompts, in contrast to competitors such as Microsoft and Google.
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently hinted at the company’s plans to disclose more about its generative AI initiatives later this year, emphasizing significant investments in this area.
Apple and Google have an existing agreement allowing Google to serve as the default search engine on Apple’s Safari web browser, although this partnership has faced regulatory scrutiny due to concerns of anti-competitive behavior.
In a separate development, Google announced a partnership with Samsung in January to introduce various generative AI technology products in the latter’s Galaxy S24 series of smartphones.
