Apple has reportedly ramped up iPhone production in India amid White House pressure on the country over its Russian oil imports.
“We have planned to up the tariffs on India,” United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Tuesday. “These are secondary tariffs for buying the sanctioned Russian oil.”
Bessent criticized India for “profiteering” from the Ukraine war by purchasing cheap Russian oil and reselling it, calling the practice “unacceptable.”
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Indian goods to 50% and warned in July that he could impose secondary tariffs of “around 100%” on Russia’s trade partners if no peace deal with Ukraine is reached by September.
In recent years, Apple has steadily shifted more production to India in a bid to lessen its dependence on China, particularly amid ongoing trade tensions.
According to Canalys data, iPhone shipments from India to the U.S. surged 76% in May as new trade restrictions loomed.
Meanwhile, Apple has pledged to invest over $600 billion in the U.S. over the next four years to strengthen domestic manufacturing.
