Cardoso to discuss cross-border payments during China visit

Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso has said Nigeria will seek to strengthen cross-border payment systems with China during an upcoming visit to Beijing, as both countries look to deepen financial cooperation and boost bilateral trade and investment.

Cardoso disclosed this at a press briefing following Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok, Thailand.

Cardoso said he had met with People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng to explore ways to strengthen financial cooperation between Nigeria and China.

He said the discussions focused on cross-border payments, settlement systems, financial technology and trade finance.

“Nigeria would build on the discussions during an upcoming visit to Beijing, with emphasis on facilitating cross-border payments, supporting trade and investment, and strengthening financial intermediation between the two countries,” he said.

The planned visit is expected to build on the discussions and explore ways to simplify transactions between Nigerian and Chinese businesses.

Stronger cross-border payment systems could facilitate bilateral trade by easing challenges associated with international settlements.

However, the CBN has yet to disclose specific implementation plans or timelines.
