Sony revives Walkman with new music players priced at $5,899

Sony has revived its Walkman brand with three new digital music players priced between $1,899 and $5,899, including a flagship model featuring a gold-plated oxygen-free copper chassis.

The flagship weighs 670g, up from 490g for its predecessor. The launch marks the first new Walkman hardware in several years, with all three models available for pre-order.

Bloomberg reported the launch on Thursday. However, Sony has yet to announce a release date or pricing for the European market.

The launch also comes ahead of the European Union’s rules requiring user-replaceable batteries in certain electronic devices, which are due to take effect on 18 February 2027.

Bloomberg reported the launch on Thursday, with three digital music players available for pre-order at prices ranging from $1,899 to $5,899. The products mark the first new hardware in several years to carry the Walkman name.

The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 features a chassis made from 99.99 per cent pure oxygen-free copper, finished with gold plating. Even its screws have received a gold-plated treatment.

According to Sony, the specially treated screws provide “a stable ground connection that delivers powerful bass, an expansive soundstage, and smooth, extended high frequencies”.
