The National Pension Commission says it has held discussions with the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Pension Commission over concerns surrounding the administration of pensions under the Contributory Pension Scheme, particularly the implementation of pension increases and wage awards.

This was disclosed in a statement by PenCom on Monday, acknowledging concerns raised by CPS pensioners in Lagos State.

PenCom’s statement followed a report by The Guardian on August 31, 2026, that pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the Contributory Pension Scheme were protesting at the Lagos House in Ikeja, demanding the implementation of pension increases and wage awards.

The retirees reportedly encountered law enforcement agents during the protest and also called for the payment of outstanding pension arrears and other benefits owed to them.

PenCom, in response, said it recognises the need to ensure that retirees receive all benefits legally due to them, while acknowledging concerns over delays in implementing approved pension adjustments.

“PenCom has engaged with the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) on matters related to the administration of pensions under the CPS, including the need to extend appropriate pension adjustments to eligible CPS retirees,” the statement partly reads.

The Commission explained that the implementation of pension enhancements requires determining beneficiaries’ eligibility, applicable adjustments, actuarial liabilities and funding requirements, as well as providing pension operators with the necessary data and instructions.

“PenCom is engaging the relevant stakeholders to ensure that these processes are properly addressed,” the Commission noted.

PenCom assured stakeholders that it would continue to collaborate with the Lagos State Government, LASPEC, Pension Fund Administrators and pensioners’ representatives to achieve a transparent, orderly and sustainable resolution of the issues.

The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of pension contributors and retirees while carrying out its regulatory and supervisory mandate to ensure compliance with applicable pension laws and regulations.

The Lagos State Government recently announced that it had paid a cumulative N168.2 billion to more than 48,000 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme since 2007.

The payments included a landmark N5 billion disbursement in July 2024, which the government said cleared all outstanding pension backlogs at the time.
