OPay explains how to check eligibility for FG’s N50,000 relief

OPay has outlined how customers can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s monthly N50,000 cash relief programme for vulnerable Nigerians, emphasising that the intervention is restricted to qualified beneficiaries.

The digital financial services provider said eligible customers would receive a pop-up notification on their OPay app homepage, which they must click to access further instructions.

In a post on its X handle on Tuesday, the company clarified that customers who do not see the notification on their apps are not eligible for the programme. It also stressed that the determination of beneficiaries’ eligibility was not its responsibility.

OPay stated, “The ₦50,000 monthly Federal Government cash support is available only to eligible citizens. Eligible customers will see a pop-up notification on their OPay app homepage. Kindly click on the pop-up to proceed with the next steps.

“Kindly note that customers who are unable to see the feature on the app are not eligible for it. Please note that we do not determine your eligibility. Kindly contact NERSI at 07000222222 for assistance.”

The fintech also cautioned customers against fraudsters, emphasising that it would never ask for their personal identification numbers or one-time passwords (OTPs) to facilitate payments under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention.

“OPay will never ask for your PIN or OTP to process a NERSI relief payment. Do not pay any agent or click unverified links,” it said.

The company urged customers to check their eligibility only through its official mobile app or by dialling the USSD code 95520#.

OPay’s clarification followed a post by an X user who shared details of the intervention, including USSD codes customers of participating financial service providers could dial to check their eligibility, amid growing public interest in the programme.

The Federal Government had announced the commencement of disbursements under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention, a presidential initiative designed to provide financial support to vulnerable households.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the start of the programme in a statement on October 30, saying eligible beneficiaries would receive N50,000 monthly to meet essential needs and cushion the impact of rising living costs.

Eligible beneficiaries will receive a monthly payment of ₦50,000, with the programme subject to regular reviews.

According to the minister, the ministry is working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent disbursement of the funds.

Beneficiaries will first receive an SMS requesting their consent, after which the payment will be made directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

Approved providers and USSD codes include ALAT by Wema (*945*23#), MoMo PSB (*671*0#), NairaGram (*726*00#), OPay (*955*20#) and Moniepoint (*557*327#).
