The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has congratulated Nigeria’s first indigenous female neurosurgeon, Dr Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu-Ibrahim, on her appointment as the Medical Director of a children’s hospital in the United States, describing the achievement as a testament to the excellence of Nigerians in the diaspora.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the commission’s Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the appointment as a significant milestone that reflects the global impact of Nigerian professionals. She added that the achievement would inspire young Nigerians, particularly girls aspiring to careers in medicine, to pursue excellence.

Dabiri-Erewa said Dr Aliu-Ibrahim’s achievement demonstrated that excellence knows no gender, race or religion, describing her appointment as an inspiration to Nigerians at home and abroad.

“Dr Salamat Aliu-Ibrahim’s appointment is yet another reminder that Muslim women cover their hair, not their brains. Her remarkable achievement demonstrates that faith and excellence are not mutually exclusive.

“She has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for countless young girls across Nigeria and beyond,” she said.

She urged Muslim women and other young Nigerians to pursue excellence, stressing that competence, integrity and hard work remain the hallmarks of individuals committed to making meaningful contributions to society.

While congratulating Dr Aliu-Ibrahim on her appointment, Dabiri-Erewa also expressed concern over the continued migration of highly skilled Nigerian healthcare professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

She, however, said the Federal Government was implementing measures to address the challenges in the health sector by improving the welfare, remuneration and working conditions of medical professionals.

According to Dabiri-Erewa, providing a more conducive environment for healthcare workers would help curb brain drain, strengthen the country’s healthcare system and support sustainable national development.

Dabiri-Erewa commended Dr Aliu-Ibrahim for projecting Nigeria positively through her excellence, dedication and professionalism, and wished her a successful tenure in her new role.

She added that NiDCOM would continue to recognise and celebrate outstanding Nigerians in the diaspora whose achievements enhance the country’s global image and inspire future generations.
