Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has become the world’s fifth-richest person after overtaking Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaire rankings.
Zuckerberg’s net worth rose to $222.1 billion, placing him ahead of Dell, whose fortune fell to $141 billion after Dell shares dropped more than 3 per cent on Monday, July 20.
The decline extended a sell-off that began after Dell’s stock hit a record high in June. Despite the recent pullback, Dell remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom this year.
Dell Technologies shares fell 3.3 per cent on July 20, extending an 8.8 per cent decline recorded the previous week. The stock has now lost more than 18 per cent from its intraday record high of $469 reached on June 1.
According to Forbes, the decline in Dell Technologies’ share price reduced Michael Dell’s fortune by about $2 billion, allowing Mark Zuckerberg to overtake him on the global rich list.
Meta shares, meanwhile, recovered from early losses and were trading nearly flat later in the session.
Despite the recent pullback, Dell Technologies shares have surged about 200 per cent this year, making the company one of the biggest beneficiaries of rising investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Dell has emerged as a major supplier of servers used in AI data centres.
Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump, who became a Dell shareholder in the first quarter, publicly encouraged investors to buy the company’s stock as demand for AI infrastructure continued to grow.
Meta is scheduled to report its quarterly results next week, while Dell Technologies is expected to release its second-quarter earnings next month.
