The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the government, the annual observance of June 12 remains a symbolic reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made by citizens who fought for the return and sustenance of civilian rule.
The minister said, “June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country.”
He added that the legacy of those struggles continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.
Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, stressing adherence to the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive leadership.
He noted that the current administration remains focused on protecting democratic institutions and ensuring they function in line with constitutional provisions.
The statement further emphasized that security agencies, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, will continue efforts to maintain peace and safety across the country, describing security as essential to sustaining democracy and national development.
The minister urged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to national unity and civic responsibility.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
He also called on citizens to actively contribute to deepening democratic values and promoting national cohesion.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the most credible elections in Nigeria’s history.
