Snapchat introduces real-time music sharing feature for users

Snapchat has launched a new feature that allows users to share the music they are listening to in real time through Snap Map, as social media platforms intensify efforts to expand music discovery and sharing.

The feature, called “Now Playing,” enables users to connect their streaming service accounts, starting with Spotify, and display their current listening activity on Snap Map.

Users can also see the songs their friends are listening to.

Snapchat has also integrated the feature with Spotlight, its short-form video platform. Users who discover a song through a Spotlight video can save it directly to Spotify or visit the track’s page on the streaming platform.

The company said users will be able to control who can view their listening activity.

The feature will not display a user’s previously played songs or listening history.

However, music sharing will remain active as long as a user has opened Snapchat within the previous 24 hours. If a user remains inactive for more than 24 hours, sharing will be paused automatically and will only resume after the app is opened again.

Users can also manually pause the feature for three hours, 24 hours or indefinitely.

“Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer,” Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, said in an emailed statement. “Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”

The launch comes as major social media platforms increasingly position themselves as music discovery tools.

TikTok, whose viral trends frequently influence global music charts, allows users to share songs from streaming services and save music they discover on the platform.

Instagram also enables users to share their current listening activity through Notes, its short status updates displayed at the top of users’ direct-message inboxes.
