NDLEA seizes cocaine opioids en route UK, Australia

NDLEA laments high rate of drug abuse in Abia

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted consignments of cocaine and opioid drugs concealed in cartons and destined for the United Kingdom and Australia, while also destroying 65,000 kilograms of skunk during operations in Delta State.

The agency disclosed that the seizures were made on Friday, May 15, 2026, at a courier company in Lagos during an examination of outbound shipments.

According to a statement issued by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, operatives uncovered 170 grams of cocaine hidden in the walls of a carton containing clothes and meant for Australia.

Babafemi said, “Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of cocaine and various opioids concealed in walls of cartons used to package clothes and other items going to the United Kingdom and Australia.

“The two seizures were recorded at a courier company in Lagos on Friday, May 15, 2026, during examination of shipments going to the UK and Australia. A total of 170 grams of cocaine sealed in cellophane parcels and buried in the walls of a carton of clothes heading to Australia were recovered.”

He added that NDLEA officers also intercepted another shipment bound for the United Kingdom containing opioid substances concealed inside a carton.

“A wide range of opioids including 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 capsules of tramadol and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection were recovered from another carton which had the United Kingdom as its final destination,” he said.

In Delta State, the anti-drug agency said its operatives destroyed large quantities of skunk during separate raids in Ukwuani and Ughelli North Local Government Areas.

Babafemi explained that a raid on Ejeonu village in Ukwuani LGA led to the destruction of 27,500 kilograms of skunk cultivated on 11 hectares of farmland, while 22.9 kilograms of the substance were recovered.

He said a 52-year-old suspect, Ifeanyichukwu Peter, was later arrested during a follow-up operation in Obiaruku.

Similarly, a raid carried out in Orogun village, Ughelli North LGA, reportedly resulted in the destruction of 37,500 kilograms of skunk on 15 hectares of farmland and the recovery of 55.4 kilograms of the substance.

“A 30-year-old suspect, Godwin Vincent Osadera, was arrested in connection with the operation,” Babafemi stated.

He noted that the combined operations, carried out with the support of soldiers, resulted in the destruction of a total of 65,000 kilograms of skunk in Delta State.

In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives reportedly intercepted a suspect along the Abuja-Kaduna highway transporting 1,989 rounds of RLA 7.62mm military-grade ammunition concealed in sacks of garri.

According to the agency, the suspect, identified as Abdullahi Hassan, was arrested on Tuesday, May 12, and subsequently handed over to another security agency alongside the recovered ammunition for further investigation.

The statement also disclosed that NDLEA operatives arrested a suspect, Husaini Suleiman, during a raid in the Dan Magaji area of Zaria town, where 361 kilograms of skunk were recovered.

In the Federal Capital Territory, the agency arrested a 29-year-old businessman, identified as Ogadi Peter, for allegedly producing drug-laced cakes and cookies for parties and social gatherings.

Babafemi said the suspect was arrested at his residence in Life Camp following intelligence reports.

“Eight hundred grams of skunk and 2.70 kilograms of drug-infused cookies were recovered from him,” he added.

The NDLEA further reported seizures across other states, including 181 kilograms of skunk in Ogun State, more than 105,000 opioid pills in Taraba State, and the destruction of over 1,388 kilograms of cannabis on farms in Edo State.

In Oyo State, two suspects — Adeleke Olamide Aliyah and Aloba Abdulazeez — were arrested in connection with the seizure of 99 litres of skuchies in Saki town.

Meanwhile, in Kano State, operatives recovered 1.2 kilograms of tramaking 225mg pills hidden inside a 25-litre keg of palm oil, while another suspect was arrested with 30.5 kilograms of skunk.
