Fire razes plastic factory in Anambra, millions lost

A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of a plastic manufacturing company located along Umuoji Road, Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, damaging goods and property estimated to be worth millions of naira.

The incident, which occurred late Saturday, affected parts of the factory structure, production equipment, raw materials, finished products, and chemical drums within the premises.

No casualty was recorded during the incident.

Sources around the area said the fire started from a section of the factory and spread rapidly, sending thick smoke into the surrounding environment before emergency responders arrived.

One eyewitness said firefighters battled the inferno for several minutes to prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“The fire started from a corner of the complex before thick smoke engulfed a large section of the vicinity. It burnt for several minutes before the arrival of firefighters,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, said emergency responders were deployed immediately after receiving a distress call.

“The Anambra State Fire Service successfully contained a fire outbreak at a plastic manufacturing company located along Umuoji Road, Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State,” Chiketa said.

According to him, the agency received the distress call at about 5:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, after which firefighters and equipment were swiftly mobilised to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the firefighting team engaged the blaze with courage and professionalism, battling the fire continuously until it was finally brought under control,” he added.

Chiketa explained that the fire damaged raw materials used for plastic production, parts of the building, production machines, finished plastic products, and some chemical containers within the factory.

“However, due to the swift intervention of the firefighters, substantial properties and equipment were saved from destruction. Thankfully, no life was lost during the incident,” he said.

Preliminary findings by the fire service indicated that welding activities carried out earlier within the company premises may have triggered the blaze.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire outbreak was caused by welding activities carried out within the company premises during the day,” Chiketa stated.

He urged residents and businesses to prioritise safety precautions, particularly during welding and other heat-related industrial operations, to prevent avoidable fire incidents.

“The fire service commends its officers and men for their bravery, professionalism, and commitment to duty in protecting lives and property,” he added, noting that firefighters withdrew from the scene in the early hours of Sunday after fully containing the situation.
