Google signs Pentagon AI deal despite staff backlash

Google has reportedly entered into an agreement with the United States Department of Defense permitting its AI models to be used for classified operations, despite objections from some company employees urging Google to reconsider,

The agreement allows the DoD to deploy Google’s AI for “any lawful government purpose,” according to The Information, citing a person familiar with the deal.

The deal was announced just a day after more than 600 Google employees, including directors and vice presidents, sent a letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, urging the company to block its AI models from being used in classified military settings.

“We want to see AI benefit humanity; not to see it being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways. This includes lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance but extends beyond,” the letter reads.

The development comes amid rising concerns over the use of AI in surveillance and military applications.

Recall, Anthropic, then the only major AI company working with the Pentagon on classified systems, ran into a roadblock in talks with the DoD after officials reportedly pushed for contract language allowing its technology to be used for “any lawful purpose.”

Following the breakdown of those negotiations, the Trump administration reportedly severed ties with Anthropic and classified the company as a supply chain risk.

In response, Anthropic went on to file two lawsuits against the Department.

However, President Donald Trump has since said his administration has held “some very good talks” with Anthropic, adding that a future agreement restoring the company’s access to Pentagon work could still be “possible.”
