Dyson has entered the oral-care market with a £420 high-tech toothbrush equipped with a built-in camera, machine-learning technology and a fluid system designed to clean between teeth.
The home appliance maker unveiled the device on Tuesday in Paris after six years of development involving 661 engineers.
The toothbrush features a “100k pixel macro lens camera” that Dyson said functions as a high-quality endoscope, allowing users to view live footage of their teeth and gums through the MyDyson app while brushing.
According to the company, the camera is designed to identify areas between teeth where plaque commonly accumulates. When such areas are detected, the device releases small jets of mouthwash from its stem to help clean between the teeth.
The brush head is also designed to clean along the gum line and remove surface stains.
Dyson said the product was developed following more than a decade of research into oral-care routines and plaque formation.
Engineers developed a “proxy plaque” to enable the company to test the effectiveness of its plaque-removal technology.
The company said its research found that users frequently miss the spaces between their teeth during routine brushing, which it identified as a key area for improving oral hygiene.
Dyson said the toothbrush combines camera technology, machine learning, fluid dynamics, brushing technology, connectivity and Wi-Fi to provide users with real-time information about their brushing habits.
The company claims the device can remove up to 72 per cent more plaque than leading electric toothbrushes, although the claim is based on Dyson’s own testing.
The launch marks Dyson’s latest expansion beyond its traditional home-appliance products, including vacuum cleaners and fans.
Founded by billionaire inventor James Dyson, the company said its engineers and scientists had spent more than a decade studying oral care before developing the new device.
