The Federal Capital Territory Administration on Monday sealed off a prominent office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service in Abuja over allegations of unpaid ground rent.
The action, which has drawn widespread public attention, was carried out by FCTA officials as part of an ongoing enforcement campaign targeting defaulters of statutory land charges within the Federal Capital Territory.
The sealed premises, located in a high-profile area of the city, houses a major operational office of the FIRS — the agency responsible for collecting federal taxes across the country.
Confirming the incident, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Media, Lere Olayinka, announced the development via his official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday.
“FCTA has sealed FIRS office in Abuja over non-payment of ground rent,” Olayinka tweeted Monday afternoon.
In the post, Olayinka stated that the FIRS office was among several properties shut down due to non-compliance with ground rent obligations, including the headquarters of Access Bank.
The FCTA had earlier announced plans to clamp down on defaulters, including private individuals, corporate organizations, and even government institutions, in a bid to address the growing backlog of unpaid ground rent, which officials say is hindering development projects within the territory.
