Vitel Wireless said it has become the first Mobile Virtual Network Operator in Nigeria to be allocated a mobile number series by the Nigerian Communications Commission.
The NCC assigned the 0712 mobile number series to Vitel, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications sector.
This was disclosed by the company in a statement on Thursday.
A mobile number series includes a unique prefix that distinguishes an operator within a country’s numbering system.
With MVNOs historically facing strict regulations, this move could signal a shift toward a more competitive market, driving investment and innovation.
According to the statement, Vitel’s launch as a fully licensed MVNO with its own number series reflects Nigeria’s increasing openness to competitive and innovative telecom solutions, enhancing service delivery and accessibility.
Vitel Wireless Chairman and CEO, Kenneth Nwabueze, stated that acquiring a unique mobile number series reflects the NCC’s trust in the company’s vision and readiness to serve the Nigerian market.
He added that Vitel has also been issued its own international routing code by the NCC, ensuring seamless global connectivity and enabling the company to deliver high-quality international telecom services.
“Having successfully met all government regulatory requirements, Vitel Wireless is now prepared for a smooth market entry and poised to launch innovative, affordable, and customer-focused services across Nigeria,” he said.
Nwabueze highlighted the significance of this milestone, calling it a “a landmark achievement not only for Vitel Wireless but also for the Nigerian telecommunications sector as a whole.
