Netflix laid off about 1,000 employees, representing roughly 6 per cent of its workforce, on Wednesday as the streaming giant grapples with slowing growth.
Most of the job cuts affect its product, technology, legal and human resources teams, according to an email sent to staff by co-chief executives Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters on Wednesday morning.
“Our mission – to entertain the world – is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources,” they said, according to TheWrap.
“Our business is strong and growing, and we remain on track to deliver our full- year forecast. We’ll continue to invest aggressively in high- impact areas to improve our service and further drive growth and innovation. Doing that means making focused choices across the business so we can keep delivering for our members, partners, employees, and investors.”
Netflix had about 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025. The streaming company’s last major round of job cuts was in 2022, although it laid off a small number of employees in its product team in February.
Sarandos admitted last month that the company’s growth had been slower than expected, saying, “We’re not growing as fast as I want us to, and we’re working on making that move faster.”
To accelerate growth, Netflix has expanded into podcasts, live events, sports, vertical video and gaming. The company has also sought to attract YouTube creators to its platform, broadened its international content offering through a partnership with French broadcaster TF1, and explored plans to introduce live channels and bundles featuring services such as Peacock.
