Social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday, said that it will try a new subscription model in which it would users a one-time annual price of $1 for the most basic functions.
Users will be charged under the new “Not A Bot” subscription for liking, reposting, quoting, and bookmarking posts on the platform’s web version.
The new subscription model is being introduced to fight spammers and bots, X said, adding that the cost will vary from country to country depending on the exchange rate.
Users in New Zealand and the Philippines will be the first to have access to the new approach, according to X.
Existing users are unaffected by this test. New users, however, will only be allowed to view and read posts, watch videos, and follow accounts if they do not desire to subscribe.
Elon Musk, who bought the firm last year, has a thorny problem with bots. The restriction on viewing tweets was implemented by X in July “to ensure the authenticity” of its user base.
