OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s identity project, WorldCoin, has gotten millions of people waiting up around orbs to get their irises scanned.

The project which has elicited interest from people who want to make easy $50 has raised concerns from around the globe with the European Union asking questions about privacy and Kenya banning the project in the country.

Identity is verified through iris scans, and the WorldCoin app is a cryptocurrency wallet that supports the project’s own WorldCoin token as well as the two most popular ones, Bitcoin and Ethereum.

According to Altman, the ability to distinguish between humans and robots with accuracy—a process known as “proof of personhood”—will determine the course of the planet.

WorldCoin does want to become the leading digital identity system in the world, which invariably means that governments and other third parties will be able to verify your identity using WorldCoin’s system and infrastructure, this iris scanning issue becomes even more of a problem.

Like OpenAI, WorldCoin is one of those businesses that launches projects with such enormous potential effect that success is all but guaranteed.
