WhatsApp unveils Apple Watch app for calls, messages

WhatsApp announced on Tuesday the launch of its new Apple Watch companion app, allowing users for the first time to receive call notifications, read complete messages, and record and send voice messages directly from their watch.

“This new experience will help you stay on top of your chats without needing to pull out your iPhone,” WhatsApp wrote in a blog post. “In addition to reading and responding to messages, for the first time, WhatsApp on Apple Watch will now support many requested features.”

Other features of the new app include the ability to react to messages and view more of your chat history on screen. Users will also enjoy clearer images and stickers.

Meta-owned WhatsApp emphasizes that, as always, personal messages and calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption. The company also plans to roll out additional functionality for Apple Watches in the future.

The WhatsApp Apple Watch app is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and later, running watchOS 10 or newer.

Tuesday’s announcement follows last week’s reports of WhatsApp testing the app.

WhatsApp’s Apple Watch app arrives just months after Snapchat launched its own.

The Snapchat app lets users preview incoming messages and respond using the keyboard, Scribble, Dictation, or emojis.
