Meta’s WhatsApp is gearing up to enable functionality for outside messaging platforms like Apple’s iMessage.
The action is being taken as the March 2024 effective date of the Digital Markets Act of the European Union approaches
.
The EU has acknowledged adding Meta to a list of gatekeepers, which requires Meta and the other companies on the list to make their services available to other companies’ platforms.
That is exactly the case with WhatsApp, and the DMA’s creators have stated that they are currently reviewing iMessage to determine whether it should also be included in the list.
The DMA will mandate that services become more interoperable; as a result, iMessage and WhatsApp might function as one network as a result of this need.
On all iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, WhatsApp communications will be supported within the communications app, and users will be able to send iMessages from within the WhatsApp app.
However, it’s vital to keep in mind that this all only applies to countries in the European Union.
WhatsApp now has until March 2024 to put its interoperability hat on. It is uncertain whether other countries will demand the implementation of a provision of this nature.
