The 36 states governors of Nigeria has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to effect the changes in its naira redesign policy to address the differences in various states.
“Governors are not opposed to the objectives of the naira redesign policy, but observed that there are huge challenges that remain problematic to the Nigerian populace”
“In the circumstances, governors expressed the need for the CBN to consider the peculiarities of states, especially as they pertain to financial inclusion and under-served locations.” the governors said in a communiqué issued after their meeting yesterday with the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The governors had set up a six-member committee which would be Chaired by the Anambra State Governor, and former governor of the Central Bank, Charles Soludo. Other members of the panel includes the governors of Akwa Ibom, Ogun, Borno, Plateau and Jigawa states.
From the communiqué, which was signed by Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; the governor of Sokoto state and the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, the governors resolved to closely with the CBN to to ensure the money redesign policy got to policy got to the poorest households, the vulnerable in society and other citizens who might be excluded.
The governors also agreed to collaborate with the CBN and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) advancing the policy.
