US grants Nvidia licenses to export H20 chips to China

Nvidia to become world's most valuable company

The United States Commerce Department has begun granting Nvidia licenses to export its H20 chips to China, a US official said on Friday, clearing a major obstacle to the AI giant’s access to a key market.

Last month, Washington reversed an April ban on selling the H20 chip to China. Nvidia had designed the processor specifically for the Chinese market to comply with Biden-era AI chip export restrictions.

The company has warned the curbs will shave $8 billion off its July-quarter sales.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with Donald Trump on Wednesday, two sources familiar with the matter said, according to Reuters.

A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment, while the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In July, Nvidia said it had applied to the US government for approval to resume sales of its H20 graphics processing unit to China and had been assured it would receive the licenses soon.

It remains unclear how many licenses have been granted, which companies in China can receive the H20 chips, or the total value of the approved shipments.
