The United States Embassy in Nigeria announced it will pause routine updates on its official X (formerly Twitter) account due to the ongoing U.S. government funding impasse.
In a statement on Wednesday, October 1, the Embassy said the suspension stems from a “lapse in appropriations,” a diplomatic term for the partial U.S. government shutdown after Congress failed to approve a budget or temporary funding.
Consequently, many non-essential government operations have reduced their activities.
“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the Embassy noted.
It said updates will be restricted to essential alerts, including security notices, emergencies, and travel warnings for U.S. citizens in Nigeria.
Despite scaling back public updates, the Embassy emphasized that consular services continue to operate normally.
“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits,” the statement read.
This means Nigerians seeking visas or other consular services can still attend appointments, though delays may occur if the funding impasse continues.
The U.S. government began shutting down on Wednesday after lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to resolve a budget impasse, with talks stalled over Democratic demands for health care funding.
Republicans and Democrats quickly blamed each other for the deadlock, which will affect hundreds of thousands of government workers and the millions of Americans who rely on federal services.
The shutdown, halting operations at multiple federal departments and agencies, highlights deep partisan divisions in Washington and raises concerns over its potential duration and impact.
