Trump threatens 200% tariffs on French wine

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to levy 200 per cent tariffs on French wines and champagne, following reports that French President Emmanuel Macron was reluctant to join his “Board of Peace” on Gaza.

Asked for a reaction to Macron’s position by a reporter in Miami, Trump downplayed the French leader’s influence and indicated he would use trade sanctions as a bargaining tool.

“Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon,” Trump said. “So you know, that’s all right. What I’ll do is, if they feel like [being] hostile, I’ll put a 200 per cent tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join.”

The Board of Peace, a global body endorsed by the United Nations Security Council in November, was established to oversee the Israel-Hamas ceasefire.

Invitations have been sent to several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Trump also reaffirmed his intentions to assert control over Greenland, dismissing the possibility of opposition from European nations.

“I don’t think they’re going to push back too much,” he said. “We have to have it …They can’t protect it.”

Referring to Denmark’s historical claims over Greenland, Trump described Danish leaders as “very good people” but argued that their centuries-old presence did not give them ownership.
