Trump signs $550bn trade deal with Japan

US considers equity stakes in chipmakers under CHIPS act

United States President Donald Trump has announced what he describes as a landmark trade agreement between the United States and Japan, valued at $550 billion.

In a social media post, Trump declared the deal as “perhaps the largest ever made,” claiming it will channel massive Japanese investment into the U.S. economy. According to him, the United States is set to receive 90% of the profits generated from the agreement.

Trump also said the deal would create “hundreds of thousands of jobs” and significantly expand American access to Japanese markets. He stated that Japan had agreed to open its borders to more U.S. exports, including vehicles, rice, and other agricultural goods.

Additionally, the post noted that Japan would implement a reciprocal 15% tariff on U.S. imports, mirroring trade measures commonly debated during Trump’s presidency.

As of press time, Japanese officials had not publicly confirmed the terms of the deal.
