Toyin Abraham’s ‘Oversabi Aunty’ movie crosses ₦1bn at box office

Nollywood filmmaker Toyin Abraham has recorded a major box office milestone as her latest film, Oversabi Aunty, crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office.

The achievement was confirmed on Monday by the film’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, through a post shared on its official X account.

According to FilmOne, Oversabi Aunty has grossed ₦1,017,201,953, making it the first directorial debut in Nollywood history to surpass the ₦1 billion threshold.

The figure also positions the movie as the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time, further underscoring its commercial success.

Celebrating the achievement, FilmOne wrote, “₦1 Billion+ at the box office. First Nollywood directorial debut to hit ₦1 Billion. 4th-highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. West Africa, this is a full celebration!!!”

Following the announcement, Toyin Abraham took to Instagram to express her appreciation to God, her fans, and everyone involved in the production of the film.

Sharing her reaction, she wrote, “My first directorial debut on the big screen. Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas near you. Thank you, God. Thank you, Toyintitans. Thank you, Nigerians. Thanks to my cast. Thanks to my crew. Thank you, FilmOne. Thank you, everyone. I’m short of words.”

Oversabi Aunty was released in December 2025 and centres on the life of an overzealous church usher whose excessive involvement in family affairs sets off a chain of chaotic and comedic situations.

The film features a star-studded cast, including Mike Ezuruonye and Odunlade Adekola, and has drawn praise for its relatable humour and strong cultural themes that resonate with Nigerian audiences.

In the same update, FilmOne highlighted another major box office feat, announcing that Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes has grossed ₦2.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing Nigerian film of the year.

The December 2025 release became the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦2 billion mark and concluded its cinema run at approximately ₦2.103 billion in just about one month.

With the success of Oversabi Aunty, Toyin Abraham has now joined the ranks of top-grossing Nigerian filmmakers, further solidifying her influence within the industry.

Meanwhile, Funke Akindele continues to reinforce her reputation as Nollywood’s box office queen, having three films, Behind The Scenes, Everybody Loves Jenifa, and A Tribe Called Judah, each grossing over ₦1 billion.

The combined box office earnings of the three films stand at approximately ₦5.39 billion, a record-setting achievement in Nigerian cinema.

Akindele now holds the distinction of leading the African box office for three consecutive years, spanning from 2023 to 2025.
