TotalEnergies, in partnership with Basra Oil Company and QatarEnergy, officially launched construction on ArtawiGas25 on Friday.
This facility will process associated gas from the Ratawi field in Basra, Iraq.
The ownership structure of the project is as follows: TotalEnergies (45%) as the operator, Basra Oil Company (30%), and QatarEnergy (25%).
The Gas Growth Integrated Project, signed in September 2021, is a $10 billion multi-energy initiative aimed at developing Iraq’s natural resources and improving electricity supply.
The GGIP project includes a large-scale gas processing plant with an initial phase designed to process 300 Mcf/d of gas. This phase will focus on recovering flared gas from three oil fields and will supply the processed gas to generate 1.5 GW of power.
The ArtawiGas25 project is expected to play a crucial role in reducing gas flaring at the Ratawi field by the end of 2025.
The project’s innovative modular design is a key feature, which could enable its replication at other Iraqi oil fields.
The Senior Vice President Middle East & North Africa, Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies, Julien Pouget, said, “We are very pleased to launch the ArtawiGas25 project: it will give the Iragi people a tangible insight into the benefits of the GGIP, which will provide more energy with less emissions. Through this project, TotalEnergies is demonstrating its capacity to deliver valuable and fast-track solutions in accordance with the government’s expectations and the country’s electricity needs. We look forward to the next GGIP milestones in the coming weeks with the start of construction of the 1 GW solar project.”
