TikTok is developing a new feature that could allow users to send money to one another through direct messages, as the social media platform expands further into financial services.
References to the potential peer-to-peer payment feature were discovered in hidden code within the current version of TikTok’s iPhone app in the United States, according to Bloomberg.
The feature, if launched, would reportedly be powered by TikTok Pay, the company’s payment service already available in parts of Southeast Asia for transactions on TikTok Shop.
The code reportedly suggests that recipients would be able to “tap to accept” payments, while users sending money could attach messages to transactions, a model similar to the functionality offered by Venmo.
However, TikTok stated that the feature is not currently being tested, indicating that the payment service remains at an early stage of development.
It is therefore unclear whether TikTok will launch the peer-to-peer payment feature or when it could become available to users.
The potential move is part of TikTok’s broader expansion beyond social media into financial and commerce-related services.
If introduced, peer-to-peer payments would further strengthen TikTok’s position in digital financial services while putting it in competition with established payment platforms such as Venmo and Zelle.
